Y, Herald writes;— “A case throwing light on the curious Btate of Parisian society has just been tried before the Civil Tribunal. It ran to some length, but the facts are few and simple. The Marquis de Tr«- velec, who was represented to belong to one of the noblest famliea in France, his ancestors having figured in the Crusades, was some time ago anx ious to marry, and as his exchequer is not flour ishing he required a young lady who in addition to youth, beauty and virtue, should possess wealth. But though, from his rank and name, having ac cess to the besfsociety, both aristocratic and finan cial, of the capital, he doubted that he could him- selt find a suitable damsel, and so he chargari a certain Madame Jolly de Montesson to seek out one lor him, promising to pay her for her trouble. This female, whose occupation is to negotiate mar riages, introduced him to a respectable and rich family, in which was a young lady ready to wed. A marria;:e was resolved on, but, for some reason not stated, it was broken otf. On that the Martjuis de Trcvelec prayed .Madame Jolly de Montesson to re.sumo her search for a wife for him, and she saidshe knew two richyoung ladies, sisters, Mdlles, A , whose jcirents wanted husbands for them. The .Marquis has a brother, the Count de Tre- velec, who was also desirous to marry, and an un derstanding w:is come to between them and Madame de Montesson that they pay her 600 i pounds sterling each, if she could secure for them 1 the hands ot the two girls, with 12,000 pounds ; sterling fortune to each, and a lesser sum in the Granville—A. VV, Venable, T. L, Hargrove, j fortune being less. In the event of - I only one of the brothers being accepted, 500 I pounds sterling were to be paid by him alone. ’ This understanding wa.s set forth in a deed drawn up ani executed in due form. “But the lather of the girls, a retired trader, would not allow them to wed nobles, and so the affair fell to the ground. Madame de .Montesson, however, knew two other sisters, Mdlles B , ot the Rue , both pretty, both young, both HOUSE OF COMMONS Alamance—Giles Mebane Alexander—l)r J M (.'arson Anson—LL Polk, E R Liles Ashe—J M Gentry Burke—J 11 Pearson Buncombe—A S Merrimou Bladen—C T Davis Bertie—P T Henry, and — Beaufort—R S Donnell, VV’ T Marsh Brunswick—T D Meares Caldwell Dickson Cabarrus — VV .S Han is Catawba—Jonai Cline Chatham—W’ P Taylor, R X* Green, Turner Bynum Cherokee—G W Hayes Craven—C C Clark, F E Alfred Cumberland and ILirnctt—C G W’right, J S Harrington, J C W’lUiams Chowan Sniall Columbus—X''^L VVilliam«on Cau-den—D D'4'erebce C.irtcret—D W Whitehurst Caswell W itli> rs, S P Hill Currituck—B M Baxter (’leveland — A G Watei>, J R Logan Davidson—Lewis ILiyiie--, E B Clark Davie Huwurd Duplin—J 1) .''tiintord, J G Branch Edi^ecomb*'—1» R Bridgers, J '' Wuodard Forsyth—J 1' Poinde.vtcr, Phillip Barrow Franklin — W Ktireen (jastun--.J H White Gr.inville—.'I Bullock, W H Jenkins, S H (’:innad;iy Guilfiird—t’ P .Mendenhall, (.’ E Shober, .J !.■ Gorrell Groene—A D Speii^ht (rates—John B.iotlie Haywood—S L Luve Hulila.x—.V 11 Davi., VV Hertford—J J V e:itos Henderson—Jus PJord;in ' 11 y de—Til man 1-am iw Iredell—A K Sinionton, A B F liaither Jack.son—A Fisher Jones — W’ P Ward - ’ .Johnston — W’ 11 \V Jas Mitchener Lenoir—J C W ooten Lincoln—V A .NlcBee Madison—.lohn 1 .li.": Martin Kw, ii McDowell — C ii Butl'U' .Mooic — Alexander Kelly Montgomery—K (i L Ban iiiLrer MaCon — H G \\ oodfin Mecklenburg—."5 W Davis, .J M Pot^s Na.sh—11 i] Williams Xcw Hanuver—.“s J Person, Daniel Shaw Northamjiton—.VI W Ransom, VV' W’ Peebles Onslow—J H Fo}’ Orange—H B ruthrie, VV’ X F’atterson Pasquotank—J '1' W’illiams Perquinions—X Xewby Pitt—B G Albritton, (.’hurehill Perkins Person Wilkinson Robeson — Alex Me.'lillan. I The result was th.it the Marquis de Trevelcc was j accepted by. and in due time married to, the elder I sister; but no union was brouszht about between the : younger girl and the younijer brother. After , the marriage, Madame de Montesson called on the Marquis de Trevelec to pay her £600, accord ing to his agreement; but he refused on the ! ground that he had only authorised her to ne- I gotiate with one of the Mdlles. B , A great deal ot angry corres- ^ pondence took place between the parties; but they 1 could not atrree, and the woman brought an ac- j tion for JtoUO. She, to support it, produced her j agreement, which expressly said that she should ! be paid that sum in the event of her obtaining ' the marriage ot the Marquis to ore oi the Mdlles.
